LESSON 5 - GIVE GLORY TO HIM (REV 14:7)

INTRODUCTION: THIS WEEK I WANT TO START OUT BY GIVING THE ALERT
CLASS MEMBER AWARD TO EDWIN AND LUCILLE AVILA. I HOPE FOR TWO
THINGS: THAT YOU WILL ALL BECOME MORE ALERT, AND THAT I WILL NEVER
HAVE TO GIVE THIS AWARD OUT AGAIN!

YOU REMEMBER AT THE END OF LAST WEEK'S LESSON LUCILLE
SUGGESTED THAT I HAD TAUGHT THE WRONG LESSON?

AND THAT I WAS NICE ABOUT IT, BUT BASICALLY THOUGHT SHE HAD BEEN
TAKING A TAD BIT TOO MUCH SOY?

WELL, SHE WAS RIGHT! BOTH LAST WEEK'S LESSON AND THIS WEEK'S
LESSON ARE BASED ON REV 14:7. WHEN SHE SHOWED ME HER LESSON, I
LOOKED AT THE TEXT AND KNEW SHE WAS WRONG. IT WAS ONLY LATER WHEN
I LOOKED AT MY OWN LESSON AND SAW MY NOTES ON THE WRONG LESSON THAT
I KNEW SHE WAS RIGHT.

SO SORRY. I CALCULATE I'VE BEEN TEACHING THE LESSON FOR ABOUT
17 YEARS, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IT HAS HAPPENED. HOPEFULLY IT
WON'T HAPPEN FOR ANOTHER 17 YEARS.

I. THE GLORY OF GOD

     A. READ REV 14:6-7. WE HAVE DISCUSSED WHAT IT MEANS TO FEAR
GOD. WE HAVE DISCUSSED WHAT IT MEANS TO WORSHIP GOD. WHAT DO
YOU THINK IT MEANS TO "GIVE GOD GLORY?" (THE GREEK WORD IS
"DOXA." VINES SAYS "ALWAYS `GOOD OPINION, PRAISE, HONOR,
GLORY, AN APPEARANCE COMMANDING RESPECT, MAGNIFICENCE,
     EXCELLENCE, MANIFESTATION OF GLORY.'")

     B. I ALWAYS LIKE THESE DEFINITIONS THAT REPEAT THE DEFINED
     WORD IN THE DEFINITION!

          1. LETS GET PRACTICAL: HOW DO WE GIVE GOD GLORY? (LIST)

     C. OUR LESSON SENDS US TO EXODUS TO FIGURE THIS OUT, SO LETS
TURN TO EX 33. YOU RECALL THAT MOSES IS UP ON MT SINIA WITH
GOD. AND HE IS CHISLING OUT THE TEN COMMANDMENTS TO TAKE THE
PLACE OF THOSE THAT HE BROKE.

          1. READ EX 33:18-23. MOSES ASKS TO SEE GOD'S GLORY.
INTERESTLINGLY HERE THE HEBREW WORD (KABOD) GLORY MEANS,
ACCORDING TO VINES, "THE GREAT PHYSICAL WEIGHT OR
          `QUANTITY' OF A THING."

          2. LETS READ ON TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS THAT GOD DID TO
SHOW MOSES HIS GLORY: READ EX 34:5-7.

          3. WE HAVE GOD DESCRIBING HIMSELF. IS THIS GOD'S GLORY?
IS THIS THE ANSWER TO MOSES REQUEST TO SEE GOD'S GLORY?
(I THINK SO--THAT THIS IS AT LEAST PART OF GOD'S GLORY.)

          4. LETS LIST THOSE THINGS THAT MAKE UP GOD'S GLORY. (EX
          34:5-7)
               a.(COMPASSION
               b. GRACIOUS
               c. SLOW TO ANGER
               d. ABOUNDING IN LOVE
               e. FAITHFUL
               f. FORGIVING
               g. JUST)

     D. 2 THESS 1:12 REFERS TO PRAYING "THAT THE NAME OF OUR LORD
JESUS MAY BE GLORIFIED IN YOU..."

          1. DO WE GIVE GOD GLORY BY: (WRITE THIS ONE THE BD)
               a. WHAT WE SAY ABOUT HIM?
               b. BY WHAT WE THINK ABOUT HIM? OR,
               c. BY DOING SOMETHING? (ALL OF THESE)

     E. HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO GIVE GOD GLORY BY WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT
          HIM?

          1. LETS LOOK AT TWO TEXTS:

               a. SOMEONE READ JOHN 15:8
               b. SOMEONE ELSE READ GAL.5:22-23 (LIST)
               c. DO YOU SEE THE LINKAGE? (WE GLORIFY THE FATHER BY
BEARING MUCH FRUIT. THEN WE FIND OUT WHAT THAT THE
               FRUIT IS IN GAL 5.)

               d. AS YOU LOOK AT THE FRUIT HERE. HOW DOES THIS
TRANSLATE INTO WHAT WE SAY ABOUT GOD? (SO MANY OF
THESE ATTRIBUTES CAN BE DEMONSTRATED (OR NULLIFIED)
               BY OUR SPEECH.)

     F. HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO GIVE GOD GLORY BY WHAT YOU THINK
ABOUT HIM? (THE TEACHER'S HELPS SUGGEST THAT "THE CHARACTER
THAT IS GLORIOUS REFLECTS THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD.... THE CALL
TO `GIVE GLORY TO GOD' DIRECTS OUR ATTENTION AWAY FROM
OURSELVES ... TO THE INFINITE ATTRACTIONS OF CHRIST AND HIS
RIGHTEOUSNESS,...." EPH 3:144-21 SUGGESTS THAT IF WE TRY TO
UNDERSTAND THE HUGE NATURE OF CHRIST'S LOVE, WE WILL GLORIFY
     HIM.)

     G. HOW DO YOU PROPOSE TO GIVE GOD GLORY BY DOING SOMETHING?
(IS 43:7 SAYS THAT WE WERE CREATED FOR GOD'S GLORY. THAT
SUGGESTS TO ME THAT WE MUST DO SOMETHING. AND I SUSPECT IT IS
TO SHOW THE ATTIBUTES OF GOD THAT WE HAVE DISCUSSED AND THE
     FRUITS WE HAVE DISCUSSED.)

     H. HOW DOES THE LIST OF GOD'S GLORY FROM EX 34 COMPARE WITH
OUR LIST OF FRUIT FROM GAL 5? (QUITE SIMILAR.)
          1. ARE YOU SURPRISED?
     I. READ IS 60:1-5. HOW CAN THE GLORY OF THE LORD "RISE" UPON
          US?

          1. WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO "ARISE?" (GET MOVING)
          2. WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO "SHINE?" (REFLECT GOD'S
               GLORY)
          3. WHAT IS SUGGESTED WHEN IT SAYS THAT "NATIONS WILL COME
TO YOUR LIGHT?" AND "KINGS" WILL COME? (v.3.OFFICIAL
INTEREST IN THE GOSPEL. THIS WILL BE A GRAND AND GLORIOUS
          TIME!)

II. GLORY TO MAN

     A. WE HAVE BEEN SPEAKING ABOUT MAN GIVING GOD GLORY. TO WHOM
DOES MAN NORMALLY GIVE THE GLORY?

          1. WHAT IS GENERALLY THE BASIS FOR MAN'S GLORY?

     B. OUR LESSON LOOKS AT THE REVERSE OF GIVING GOD THE GLORY.
LETS LOOK AT JER 9:23-24. READ

          1. IF YOU DECIDED THAT BASED UPON THIS LESSON YOU WERE
GOING TO PLAN TO BOAST THAT YOU KNEW AND UNDERSTOOD GOD,
          HOW WOULD YOU DO IT?

          2. WOULD YOU BOAST THAT YOU KNOW GOD BY SHOWING YOUR
SPIRITUAL VALUES? YOUR MORAL VALUES? YOUR CHARACTER AND
          PURPOSE?

III. NEXT WEEK: WORSHPING OUR CREATOR!
