LESSON 10 - THE REJECTED KING (MATTHEW 21:18--23:39)

INTRODUCTION: THE CHAPTERS IN MATTHEW THAT WE LOOK AT THIS WEEK ARE
DIRECTED IN A WAY TOWARDS US, AND ME. JESUS ADDRESSES THOSE WHO ARE
IN THE CHURCH AND WHO PROFESS TO BE HIS FOLLOWERS AND THOSE WHO ARE
TEACHERS.
THE ODD THING IS THAT HE DOES A LOT OF YELLING AT "US." IN PAST CHPTS. WE
HAVE LOOKED AT THOSE WHO WERE SINNING AND HURTING AND JESUS DIDN'T DO
A LOT OF YELLING. I GUESS YOU COULD CALL IT THE "BENT REED SYNDROM."
THIS WEEK THE SINNERS RATE GETTING YELLED AT. LETS SEE WHY. OPEN BIBLES
TO MATT. 23.

I. PRIDE
      A. I WAS LISTENING TO JIM DOBSON'S PROGRAM THIS WEEK. HE SAID THAT
THERE ARE TWO STANDARDS THAT WE USE TO VALUE A PERSON MORE THAN
ANYTHING ELSE. WE ADMIRE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THESE TRAITS AND WE LOOK FOR
THEM IN A SPOUSE.
            1. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK THEY ARE? (LIST)
(1. INTELLIGENCE. 2. BEAUTY. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT WHEN LOOKING FOR A
SPOUSE, MALES ARE MORE INTERESTED IN BEAUTY THAN IN INTELLIGENCE AND
FEMALES ARE MORE INTERESTED IN INTELLIGENCE THAN IN BEAUTY. HE
SUGGESTED THAT IS BECAUSE MEN SEE BETTER THAN THEY THINK.)
      B. DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO BE BEAUTIFUL AND INTELLIGENT?
      C. LETS READ MATT. 23:5-10. (WE WILL START AT THE BACK AND WORK OUR
WAY FORWARD.)
      D. "RABBI" MEANS MASTER. WHY DID JESUS SAY NOT TO CALL SOMEONE
MASTER, OR "FATHER" OR "TEACHER?"
            1. WAS HE CONCERNED THAT THE PEOPLE MIGHT RELY ON THESE
TEACHERS TOO MUCH?
            2. OR WAS HE CONCERNED ABOUT THOSE CALLED "RABBI," "MASTER,"
"FATHER," OR "TEACHER?"

(I THINK HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE RABBI'S. "THERE IS NOTHING SO
OFFENSIVE TO GOD OR SO DANGEROUS TO THE HUMAN SOUL AS PRIDE AND SELF-
SUFFICIENCY. OF ALL SINS IT IS THE MOST HELPLESS, THE MOST INCURABLE." COL
154.)
      E. DO YOU STILL WANT YOUR CHILDREN TO BE BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL?
      F. WHY IS PRIDE SO DANGEROUS? AN INCURABLE AND HELPLESS SIN? (DON'T
NEED ANYONE. KNOW BETTER THAN OTHERS. THUS YOU DON'T FEEL THE NEED
FOR HELP.)

II. TWO SONS.
      A. READ MATT.21:28-31a.
      B. THE ANSWER TO JESUS QUESTION IS THAT THE 1ST DID WHAT HIS FATHER
WANTED. MY QUESTION IS, WHY DO YOU SUSPECT THE 1ST ENDED UP DOING WHAT
HIS FATHER WANTED? WHY DIDN'T THE SECOND DO WHAT HE SAID HE WOULD DO?
(PRESSURE OF DISOBEDIENCE. KNOWING THAT HIS FATHER WAS UPSET WITH HIM.)
      C. READ MATT. 31b-32. IN MY MIND I SEE JESUS YELLING HERE. WHY DOES HE
NOT YELL AT THE TAX COLLECTORS AND THE PROSTITUTES AND THE OTHER "BENT
REEDS" AND HE YELLS AT THE PHARISEES?
            1. IS BEING A THIEF OR A PROSTITUTE BETTER THAN BEING A
HYPOCRITE? (NO. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE SITUATION OF THE PHARISEES WAS
DESPERATE. THEY DID NOT SEE THEIR SIN AT ALL. JESUS HAD TO SHAKE THEM UP
TO GET THEIR ATTENTION. THE SON WHO SAID THAT HE WOULD GO AND THEN DID
NOT, THOUGHT HE WAS DOING RIGHT, HE WAS JUST TAKING HIS TIME. THE SON
WHO WAS NOT DOING RIGHT KNEW IT AND IT BOTHERED HIM.)
      D. SO, SHOULD WE HAVE A RULE OF THUMB, THAT WHEN SOMEONE IS A
CHURCH MEMBER WE YELL AT THEM, AND WHEN SOMEONE IS NOT WE GIVE THEM
THE "BENT REED" APPROACH?
(THOSE WHO ARE ADVOCATES OF SIN, WHO HAVE PRIDE OF OPINION AND
ADVOCATE WHAT THEY ARE DOING SHOULD BE YELLED AT. THOSE WHO ARE
STRUGGLING WITH WHAT THEY ACKNOWLEDGE IS SIN SHOULD BE GIVEN THE
BENT REED TREATMENT.)

III. THE RIGHT STUFF.
      A. I GET THE PICTURE THAT JESUS IS SAYING TO THE TEACHERS "YOU ARE
ALMOST HOPELESS, YOU HAVE THE WRONG ATTITUDE AND YOU DON'T EVEN
KNOW IT."
      B. SO LETS SEE IF HE TELLS US THE RIGHT ATTITUDE. READ MATT. 22:35-40.
ON THIS FIRST PART I'M NOT SURE WHAT JESUS MEANT BY THE REPETITION WHEN
HE SAID LOVE GOD WITH MIND HEART AND SOUL. BUT THE IDEA THAT WE SHOULD
LOVE GOD SEEMS PRETTY CLEAR.
      C. HOW ABOUT THE SECOND PART. WHAT DOES LOVING ANOTHER AS
YOURSELF REALLY MEAN?
1.BUY THEM NEW CAR IF YOU BUY NEW CAR?
            2. LET THEM DRIVE YOUR NEW CAR FOR A WEEK?
            3. EXACTLY LIKE YOU LOVE YOURSELF?

IV.MARRIAGE FEAST
      A. IF NEED MORE TIME, READ MATT. 22:1-11.
      B. ASK ABOUT THE TWO CUTS.

V.NEXT WEEK: MATT. 24+25.
