LESSON 12 - THE KING CONDEMNED (MATTHEW 26)

INTRODUCTION: THIS WEEK WE LOOK AT JESUS FROM THE TIME THAT MARY
ANOINTS HIM WITH PERFUME AND OF THE LAST SUPPER TO THE BEGINNING OF HIS
TRIAL.
YOU KNOW THE FACTS. WHAT I WANT TO DISCUSS IS THE PERSONAL TRAGEDY
LESSONS TO BE LEARNED

I. DISCIPLES POINT OF VIEW
      A. READ MATT. 26:1-2, 20-22 AND 31-35.
      B. WE HAVE DISCUSSED BEFORE HOW THE DISCIPLES EXPECTED JESUS TO
SET UP AN EARTHLY KINGDOM AND THAT THEY WOULD BE THE PRINCIPAL
RULERS. NOW JESUS SAYS THAT HE WILL BE KILLED.
            1. WHAT DO YOU THINK WAS GOING THROUGH THEIR MINDS?
            2. WHAT IS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU HAVE PUT A GREAT DEAL OF
TIME, HOPE AND MONEY IN A PROJECT AND IT SEEMS TO BE GOING ALL WRONG?
            3. DO YOU THINK THAT THEY ACCEPTED THIS?
            4. DO YOU THINK THAT THEY WERE TRYING TO WORK OUT A WAY IN
WHICH THEIR OLD IDEA THAT JESUS WOULD SET UP AN EARTHLY KINGDOM COULD
BE MERGED WITH THE NEW IDEAS THAT JESUS WAS GIVING THEM?

      C. DO YOU THINK THAT THESE MEN WERE REALLY WILLING TO DIE FOR
JESUS?
1.READ 26:47-51. JOHN 18:10 TELLS US THAT THIS MAN WAS PETER. AND
LUKE 22: 36-38 TELLS US THAT THE DISCIPLES ONLY HAD TWO SWORDS AMONG
THEM.
                  a. WAS PETER READY TO DIE FOR HIS MASTER?
             (ABSOLUTELY!)
      D. I HAVE THREE QUESTIONS FOR YOU:
            1. WAS PETER RIGHT IN WHAT HE DID? (NO)
            2. DID HE HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE? (HE WAS WILLING TO GIVE ALL
FOR JESUS)
            3. DID THE DISCIPLES FLEE BECAUSE THEY WERE COWARDS?
(I THINK THAT THEY FLED BECAUSE NOTHING WAS GOING ACCORDING TO
EXPECTATIONS. YOU CAN FIGHT IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE FIGHTING ABOUT.
THEY LOOKED FOR AN EARTHLY KINGDOM AND FOUND THEY WERE WRONG. THEY
LOOKED TO FIGHT FOR THEIR LORD AND FOUND THAT HE WASN'T GOING TO FIGHT.
-----THE LESSON HERE IS THAT WHEN YOU'VE GOT SERIOUS PROBLEMS, YOU HAVE
TO PUT AWAY YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE AND SIMPLY TRUST GOD.

II.HOW WE PRAY
      A. READ MATT. 26:36-39,42-44.
      B. LETS GET THE PICTURE RIGHT HERE:
            1. JESUS IS REALLY UPSET-HIS MIND IS "OVERWHELMED WITH
                  SORROW."
            2. EVER FEEL THAT WAY? OVERWHELMED AND IT WILL TAKE A
MIRACLE TO GET YOU OUT OF THE SITUATION.
      C. HOW DO YOU PRAY THEN?
            1. IF YOU PRAY FOR A MIRACLE "ACCORDING TO GOD'S WILL," DON'T
YOU SHOW A LACK OF FAITH?
            2. BUT IF YOU JUST PRAY BOLDLY FOR GOD TO PERFORM A MIRACLE,
DO YOU TRY TO FORCE GOD TO DO YOUR WILL (NOT HIS)?
      D. DID THE "CUP PASS" FROM JESUS? (NO)
      E. ASSUME YOU DIDN'T KNOW WHAT YOU KNOW NOW. LOOK AT IT FROM
THE DISCIPLES POINT OF VIEW. DO YOU THINK THAT IT WAS GOD'S WILL THAT
JESUS BE BEATEN? ABUSED? KILLED?

      F. PEOPLE COME TO ME AND THEY SAY, "I'VE GOT THIS PROBLEM." AND I
KNOW THAT IT IS NOT THE LORD'S WILL THAT PEOPLE ARE ABUSED BY LIFE,
CIRCUMSTANCES OR OTHERS. SO WE KNOW WHAT THE LORD'S WILL IS AND WE
PRAY. IT SEEMS THAT THE PROBLEM SHOULD BE TAKEN AWAY. BUT CAN WE
CONFIDENTLY SAY THAT IT WILL?

      G. WHAT IS THE ANSWER? NEVER PRAY BECAUSE GOD WILL WORK IT OUT
ANYWAY?
            1. YOU CAN NEVER BELIEVE THAT YOU WILL BE PROTECTED FROM
HARM OR EMBARASSMENT OR ABUSE?
(THIS WEEK I READ SOMETHING THAT REALLY HELPED ME ON THIS. THE BIBLE
TELLS US OVER AND OVER THAT GOD IS THE FATHER AND WE ARE THE CHILDREN.
MY KIDS ASK ME FOR THINGS TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THEIR ABILITY TO
UNDERSTAND. BUT SINCE I AM OLDER AND MORE EXPERIENCED, I WILL RESPOND
FROM A DIFFERENT LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING.
SO WHEN WE PRAY, LIKE MY KIDS, WE SHOULD ASK, TRUST AND BELIEVE.
BUT WE SHOULD DO SO IN THE CONFIDENCE THAT GOD IS GOD AND KNOWS IT ALL.
I KNOW THINGS MY KIDS DON'T KNOW, AND SOMETIMES IT WOULDN'T DO ANY
GOOD FOR ME TO TRY TO EXPLAIN IT TO THEM.
AND THE CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THIS IS HERE, WHERE JESUS HIMSELF, WHO
KNOWS THE WILL OF THE FATHER SAYS, IF THIS CAN PASS, LETS DO IT!"

III. IF HAVE TIME: PARALLELS IN OUR LIVES
      A. THE LESSON HELPS SUGGEST SEVERAL WORDS THAT THEY THINK MAY
REFLECT WHAT THAT THE GOSPEL WRITERS HAD IN MIND WHEN THEY DESCRIBED
JESUS FEELINGS IN GETHSEMANE. THESE INCLUDE (LIST):
            1.TROUBLED
            2.DESPONDENCY
            3.ANGUISH
            4.OVERWHELMED
            5.ALARM
            6.HORROR-STRUCK
            7.DEEP DISTRESS
            8.DREAD
I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU EXPERIENCED THESE FEELINGS.
THEN MULTIPLY THEM BY ALL THE SIN IN THE WORLD. ADD PYSICAL ABUSE. ADD
FRIENDS DESERT YOU. ADD GOD DESERTS YOU.
YOUR PROBLEMS AREN'T REALLY WORTH TALKING ABOUT IN COMPARISON.
-----WE HAVE A GOD WHO WENT THROUGH THIS BECAUSE HE LOVES US!
-----WE HAVE A GOD WHO IS SYMPATHETIC TO EVERY ONE OF OUR PROBLEMS.

IV. NEXT WEEK MATT 27 AND 28-- THE LAST CHAPTER.

NEXT LOOK AT THE WORDS ON P143 AND ASK PEOPLE TO RELATE TO THEIR OWN
EXPERIENCES.
