LESSON 11 - PRECIOUS PROMIES

INTRODUCTION: OUR LESSON TODAY IS ABOUT GOD'S PROMISES. THE BIBLE
HAS A LOT OF PROMISES.

I. GOD'S PROMISES

     A. LETS LIST YOUR FAVORITE BIBLE PROMISES?
          1. all things work together ... rm 8:28
          2. in my house are many mansions ... joh 14:2
          3. if I go I will come again ... joh 14:3
          4. in a moment, twinkling eye, last trump ... 1 cor 15:52
          5. eye not seen, ear heard, things God prepared 1cor2:9
          6. as far as east from west remove transg ps103:12
          7. as lightening cometh out of the east..2nd com mt24:27

     B. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT GOD INCLUDED THESE PROMISES IN THE
BIBLE? (SO WE WILL TRUST HIM AND GIVE US COMFORT.)

II. POSITIVE, CONDITIONAL PROPHECY

     A. OPEN YOUR BIBLES TO JER 23:5-8.

          1. WHAT PROMISES DO YOU SEE IN THIS TEXT?
               a.RAISE UP TO DAVID A RIGHTEOUS BRANCH (v.5);
b.JUDAH AND ISREAL WILL BE RESTORED AND IT SEEMS
                    REUNITED (v.6);
c.A RETURN FROM THE EXILE OF BABYLON (v.8)

          2. GOD PROMISED THAT HIS PEOPLE WOULD RETURN FROM THE
NORTHERN KINGDOM JUST LIKE THEY RETURNED FROM EGYPT. DID
          THAT HAPPEN?

          3. AND DID THE TWO KINGDOMS UNITE? (WELL, THEY HAD ONE
GOV'T UNDER EZRA AND NEHEMIAH. REDUCED SIZE OF THE
          COUNTRY.) (SEE WED LESSON0

          4. WHAT ABOUT THIS RIGHTEOUS BRANCH IN v. 5? WHO IS THIS?
          (JESUS)

          5. KNOWING THIS PROPHECY, IS THERE ANY WONDER THAT THE
JEWS EXPECTED CHRIST TO SET UP A KINGDOM AND THROW OFF
          THE ROMANS?
               a. ARE YOU SURPRISED NOW THAT THE DISCIPLES, WHEN
JESUS WAS ABOUT TO RETURN TO HEAVEN, WERE RECORDED
IN ACTS 1:6 AS ASKING, "LORD, ARE YOU AT THIS TIME
GOING TO RESTORE THE KINGDOM TO ISRAEL?"

          6. SO, WHY DIDN'T JESUS DO WHAT WAS PROMISED HERE?

               a. LETS TURN TO JER 33 AND READ v.14-17. THIS IS A
LITTLE CLEARER STATEMENT OF THIS SAME PROMISE, PLUS
AN ADDITIONAL PROMISE. DID THIS EVER COME TRUE?

               b. NOW LETS READ JER 33:20-22. DOES THIS SUGGEST
THAT GOD'S PROMISES ARE CONDITIONAL ON OUR
               OBEDIENCE?
                    (1) WHAT COVENANT DOES GOD HAVE WITH THE DAY
                    AND THE NIGHT?
                    (2) AND HAS HE EVER BROKEN THAT?

(GOD SAYS THAT THE DAY AND THE NIGHT COME WHEN THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO
COME. THEY ALWAYS HAVE AND THEY ALWAYS WILL. IT IS ABSURD TO ASSUME
OTHERWISE. SO GOD SAYS THAT HIS PROMISE TO DAVID AND THE LEVITES
IS AS SURE AS THE DAY AND THE NIGHT!!)

          7. OUR LESSON TALKS ABOUT "CONDITIONAL PROMISES." DOES
THIS SOUND LIKE IT COULD POSSIBLY BE CONDITIONAL?

               a. LETS READ JER 18:9-10.

          8. HOW DO YOU RECONCILE JER 33:20-21 WITH JER 18:9-10?
(JER 33 WAS FULFILLED BY JESUS. IN REV 22:16 JESUS SAYS
THAT HE IS "THE ROOT AND THE OFFSPRING OF DAVID, AND THE
          BRIGHT MORNING STAR.")

          9. LETS GO BACK TO A POINT WE TOUCHED ON BEFORE AND
CONSIDER THIS A MOMENT. DID THE JEWS UNDERSTAND HOW THIS
          PROPHECY WOULD BE FULFILLED?

a.IF THE JEWS HAD BEEN FAITHFUL, WOULD JESUS HAVE
COME AS "A KING WHO WILL REIGN WISELY AND DO WHAT
IS JUST AND RIGHT IN THE LAND?" (QUOTE FROM JER
23:5) (NOTE THAT v.6 SEEMS TO KEY THIS TO THE
               EXISTANCE OF JUDAH AND ISRAEL.)

          10. CAN YOU HONESTLY SAY THAT IF YOU LIVED IN JEREMIAH'S
TIME, THAT YOU WOULD HAVE UNDERSTOOD THIS TO MEAN
SOMETHING OTHER THAN JESUS BEING AN EARTHLY RULER?

               a. CAN ANY OF US AFFORD TO BE ARROGANT AND SELF
ASSURED ABOUT OUR INTERPRETATION OF PROPHECY?

     B. (DRAW THIS). YOU REMEMBER THAT JER 23 (v.7-8) COMPARED
COMING OUT OF BABYLON TO COMING OUT OF EGYPT. WE COMPARE THIS
TO THE SECOND COMING AND A LOT OF THESE TEXTS WHICH PROMISE
FUTURE PROSPERITY TO ISRAEL WE SAY NOW POINT TO THE SECOND
     COMING.

          1. IS THE PROMISE OF THE SECOND COMING CONDITIONAL?

          2. WAS THE EGYPTIAN REDEMPTION CONDITIONAL? (YES, FOR
THOSE WHO LEFT. MOST ALL DID NOT ENTER THE PROMISED LAND.
               a. WHY NOT?

     C. IF WE BELIEVE THAT THE PROPHECY OF THE SECOND COMING IS
CONDITIONAL -- AT LEAST AS FAR AS WE ARE PERSONALLY CONCERNED, WHAT
SHOULD WE DO? (KEEP THE CONDITION. BE RIGOROUS IN OUR
FAITHFULNESS.)

III. NEGATIVE PROPHECY

     A. READ JER 30:5-9. WHAT IS MEANT BY MEN HAVING THEIR HANDS ON
     THEIR STOMACH? (FEAR.)

     B. WHAT IS THE TIME OF JACOB'S TROUBLE? (FOR JACOB, IT WAS THE
TIME THAT HE THOUGHT THAT ESAU MIGHT KILL HIM AND HE WRESTLED
WITH THE ANGEL ALL NIGHT AND WAS BLESSED. GEN 32.)

     C. THE TEACHERS' HELPS POINT TO REV 12:17 WHICH PROPHESIES
THAT THE "DRAGON WAS ENRAGED AT THE WOMAN AND WENT OFF TO MAKE
WAR AGAINST THE REST OF HER OFFSPRING--THOSE WHO OBEY GOD'S
COMMANDMENTS AND HOLD TO THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS."

     D. AND THE GC p 621 REFERS TO A "TIME OF JACOB'S TROUBLE" THAT
TAKES PLACE JUST BEFORE THE SECOND COMING.

          1. DO YOU SEE A PARALLEL IN OUR FUTURE TO THE BABYLONIAN
          SIEGE OF JERUSALEM?

               a. DOES THIS ATTACK HELP TO DISCIPLINE THE SAINTS?
               b. DOES IT HAPPEN BECAUSE OF OUR UNFAITHFULNESS? (IN
JER 30:11 JESUS SAYS THAT THE BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY
IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DISCIPLINE.)
               c. WILL GOD "PULL IT OUT" FOR HIS FAITHFUL PEOPLE?

     E. SO THIS VERY DARK PERIOD IS FACING JER AND JUDAH. IS THERE
A SILVER LINING TO THIS DARK CLOUD? (YES. JER 30:8. GOD
PROMISES THAT AFTER THE TIME OF JACOB'S TROUBLE, THAT HE WILL
     MAKE THINGS RIGHT AGAIN.

     F. THERE IS A GREAT QUOTATION IN THE LESSON FROM THE DA. (PAGE
     106) "ALL GOD'S PROMISES ARE CONDITIONAL ON THE OBEDIENCE OF
HIS PEOPLE. THIS CONDITION IS STATEED IN THE COVENANT: GOD'S
LAW IS TO BE WIRTTEN IN THE HEART. PERSONS WHO WILLINGLY
EXPERIENCE THIS TRANSFORMING GRACE FIND THEMSELVES IN HARMONY
WITH THEIR CREATOR. TO SUCH, THE DIVINE PROMISES ARE
     ABSOLUTE."

IV. NEXT WEEK: THE SIEGE OF JERUSALEM
